During a goodwill and working visit to Lomé, Béninois President Romuald Wadagni joined Togolese Council President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé in reaffirming their shared commitment to bolstering bilateral cooperation, regional integration, and security coordination between their nations.

This pivotal stop in Lomé, marked by a drive to enhance collaborative ties, extends the new Béninois President Wadagni’s sub-regional diplomatic tour. His itinerary previously included significant engagements in Nigeria, Niger, and Burkina Faso, underscoring the priority he places on fostering strong neighborhood relations across West Africa.

On Wednesday, during his official visit to Togo, President Romuald Wadagni engaged in discussions with President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé of the Togolese Republic. Their talks centered on strengthening the bilateral relationship, advancing regional integration, and improving security coordination between Bénin and Togo.

This diplomatic initiative is one of several undertaken by Bénin’s new head of state since assuming the highest office. Before arriving in Lomé, Mr. Wadagni had already visited Nigeria, Niger, and Burkina Faso, clearly demonstrating his intent to prioritize regional cooperation and neighborly ties throughout West Africa.

A joint communiqué released following the meeting highlighted that both leaders unequivocally reaffirmed their dedication to deepening the historical bonds of fraternity, solidarity, and cooperation between Bénin and Togo. They stressed the critical importance of continuous political dialogue as a cornerstone for consolidating peace, ensuring stability, and building mutual trust.

Economic matters also featured prominently in their discussions, with both parties commending the progressive increase in commercial exchanges. They further agreed to enhance connectivity infrastructure, streamline the flow of cross-border trade, and encourage private investments.

Addressing regional concerns, the two leaders reiterated their unwavering commitment to West African integration and the principle of free movement for people, goods, and services. They also voiced profound concern regarding the escalating terrorist threat and pervasive cross-border criminality, pledging to intensify their joint security cooperation efforts.

Concluding his visit, Romuald Wadagni extended an invitation to Faure Gnassingbé for an official visit to Bénin. The invitation was graciously accepted, and the specific arrangements for this upcoming visit are slated to be determined through established diplomatic channels.
