Benin’s president Wadagni strengthens ties with Mali amid Sahel alliance shift

Benin’s President Romuald Wadagni is continuing his West African diplomatic tour, this time visiting Mali to foster closer ties with the Alliance of Sahel States (AES). Following stops in Niger and Burkina Faso, his visit to Bamako underscores a strategic effort to restore dialogue with the region’s military-led governments.

Diplomatic thaw between Bamako and Cotonou

During the meeting with Malian leader Assimi Goïta, the two heads of state issued a joint statement emphasizing their commitment to revitalizing bilateral relations. Key areas of discussion included economic, trade, and cultural cooperation, with Wadagni extending an invitation for Goïta to visit Benin—a gesture signaling growing diplomatic rapprochement.

A new chapter in Sahel relations

The visit follows a period of strained relations between Benin and AES member states, particularly Niger after the 2023 coup. Since his May 24 inauguration, President Wadagni has prioritized mending fences with Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, aiming to reduce regional tensions.

Regional divides and strategic stakes

This diplomatic push comes as the Alliance of Sahel States—comprising Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger—has distanced itself from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), citing concerns over sovereignty and security. By engaging directly with AES leadership, Wadagni’s tour marks a pivotal moment in West African diplomacy, potentially easing divisions within the bloc.
