Dakar court examines sonko complaint over touba remarks
In a significant legal move, a group representing the descendants of Serigne Touba has lodged a formal complaint against political leader Ousmane Sonko. The complaint, filed at the Dakar High Court, centers on statements Sonko made during the unveiling of his party’s new headquarters over the weekend.
According to the complainants, Sonko alleged that “dirty money had entered the holy city of Touba”, a claim they argue has tarnished the reputation of the revered religious center and its residents. The group, led by Serigne Modou Maroun Niang and Serigne Mourtalla Bousso, emphasizes that Touba was founded on principles of integrity, faith, and justice by Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba, and that Sonko’s remarks undermine these values.
Legal action seeks accountability
The complaint, registered under case number 12562, demands a thorough investigation by the Public Prosecutor to verify the validity of Sonko’s claims. The plaintiffs are requesting Sonko’s testimony to clarify his statements and provide supporting evidence. They are also urging authorities to pursue legal action if the allegations are found to be unfounded, including potential charges of defamation or spreading false information under Senegalese law.
Defending Touba’s honor
The collective argues that Sonko’s remarks have cast unjustified suspicion over Touba, a city known for its moral and spiritual standing. They insist that the allegations not only harm the city’s image but also disrespect its inhabitants. By filing this complaint, they aim to restore dignity to Touba and ensure that any reputational damage is addressed through the legal system.
As the case moves forward, the court’s decision will determine whether Sonko’s statements will face further scrutiny or if the complaint will be dismissed based on the evidence presented.
