Fdr urges broad opposition front after constitutional ruling on Ousmane Sonko

The Front pour la Défense de la Démocratie et de la République (FDR) has issued a firm response following the Constitutional Council’s verdict regarding Ousmane Sonko’s return to the Assemblée nationale. In a statement released this Thursday, the opposition coalition maintained that the legal ruling does not resolve the political friction surrounding the former Prime Minister’s resumption of his parliamentary seat.

While acknowledging the decision of the Council, which declared itself without jurisdiction to rule on the claims of forfeiture raised by the petitioners, the FDR argued that this technicality does not validate the leader of Pastef’s reintegration. The coalition insists that their objections remain entirely relevant despite the judicial outcome.

Opposition warns of government overreach

The FDR directed sharp criticism toward Ousmane Sonko and the current administration, accusing them of steering Sénégal into a period defined by incompetence and hubris. The coalition also took issue with recent public statements made by the head of Pastef during international press engagements, suggesting his views on national identity are deeply problematic.

The Front pour la Défense de la Démocratie et de la République expressed grave concern over the current state of the nation, warning against what it describes as authoritarian drifts by those in power. Despite these tensions, the coalition reaffirmed its commitment to conducting its struggle within the framework of republican institutions and the rule of law.

A call for national mobilization

Beyond the specific case of Ousmane Sonko, the FDR is calling for a massive unification of political and social forces to challenge the current regime. The coalition is reaching out to political parties, civil society organisations, trade unions, youth movements, and all democratic citizens to form a broad front. This collective is intended to offer a credible alternative to the existing leadership.

This mobilization effort follows the Constitutional Council’s rejection of appeals that challenged the procedure allowing Ousmane Sonko to reclaim his seat. While the ruling effectively closes the legal chapter on this parliamentary dispute, the political battle in Sénégal appears to be intensifying.
