The Al-Qaïda-affiliated armed group, Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal Muslimeen (JNIM), has released a new propaganda video. This footage documents the significant assault launched on April 25 against the military camp and airport in Sévaré, a crucial location near Mopti in central Mali.
The attack on Sévaré was not an isolated incident but part of a series of synchronized offensives targeting various Malian cities. These operations were executed by JNIM jihadists in conjunction with Tuareg separatists from the Front de libération de l’Azawad (FLA).
According to Bakary Sambe, director of the Timbuktu Institute and a respected analyst, this propaganda material provides a clear illustration of JNIM’s evolving strategic approach.
Mr. Sambe highlighted JNIM’s demonstrated capability to infiltrate urban environments and highly strategic locations, such as the Sévaré airport and military facility. He emphasized that this capacity has raised considerable concern for both the Malian army and its Russian allies operating in the region.
The coordinated attacks in April had far-reaching consequences, including the recapture of Kidal by separatist forces and the assassination of Mali’s Defense Minister, Sadio Camara, in Kati, close to the capital, Bamako.
Official reports from the Malian government indicated that these assaults also left 16 individuals wounded.
Bakary Sambe further elaborated on JNIM’s operational success, explaining that the group has progressively maneuvered Mali into a state that is neither full peace nor outright war. Within this ambiguous environment, JNIM is increasingly deploying an aggressive strategy. He also noted the rise of prominent figures like Bina Diarra, one of JNIM’s spokespersons, who is instrumental in solidifying the group’s perception as a legitimate political force.
The release of this propaganda video coincides with a significant development from Malian authorities, who have announced rewards for any intelligence leading to the location or capture of JNIM leaders. This initiative underscores the ongoing and determined counter-terrorism strategy being pursued against the group across the Sahel region.
