Iyad Ag Ghaly: the Sahel’s most wanted militant leader
In an official statement broadcast on national television, Malian officials unveiled a two-billion-CFA-franc bounty for reliable information about Iyad Ag Ghaly. Once a Tuareg rebel leader, he now heads the JNIM, which has spearheaded the jihadist insurgency plaguing the Sahel for over a decade. He faces United Nations sanctions, a U.S. bounty, and an International Criminal Court arrest warrant for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity.
Six other militant leaders placed under reward
The Malian government has also set a price on the heads of six other armed group leaders. Among them are Amadou Kouffa, a key JNIM figure, as well as Alghabass Ag Intalla and Bilal Ag Cherif, leaders of the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA). Authorities allege these individuals played central roles in planning and executing attacks against state targets.
A response to rising violence
This announcement follows coordinated JNIM and FLA offensives in late April that targeted multiple military positions across Mali. The attacks marked a critical escalation in the conflict and resulted in the death of Defense Minister Sadio Camara, a central figure in the military-led government.
