Morocco reaffirms backing for political process in Libya

Libya, Mohamed Arrouchi, Libyan crisis

Morocco has once again voiced its unwavering support for a political resolution to end the prolonged crisis in Libya. The commitment was reaffirmed during a recent session of the African Union’s Peace and Security Council (AU-PSC), where Morocco’s Permanent Representative to the African Union and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, Mohamed Arrouchi, underscored the Kingdom’s dedication to fostering national reconciliation and inter-Libyan dialogue.

In his address, Arrouchi emphasized that the Skhirat Agreement, signed on December 17, 2015, under the auspices of the United Nations, remains a credible and essential framework for achieving a lasting political solution in Libya. He called for the preservation of Libya’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity as fundamental prerequisites for sustainable stability in the country.

The diplomat also expressed Morocco’s deep appreciation for the African Union’s relentless efforts to promote peace, security, and stability across the continent. These efforts, he noted, have been particularly pivotal in advancing a political solution to Libya’s crisis, reflecting the AU’s commitment to continental harmony.

Highlighting Morocco’s proactive role, Arrouchi referenced recent meetings held in Tripoli and Zinten, which culminated in a landmark agreement signed in the Libyan capital on January 7, 2026. This accord, brokered between representatives of the Government of National Unity and the Government of the East, marks a significant step toward national cohesion.

Arrouchi reiterated that Morocco’s involvement in Libya’s political process is guided by a commitment to bridging divides among Libyan factions, earning the trust of all parties involved. These efforts align with international legality, the principles of the Skhirat Agreement, and the Bouznika understandings, all aimed at fostering an inclusive, Libyan-led solution devoid of military interference.

The diplomat concluded by stressing the need to continue prioritizing diplomatic channels over military options to resolve the crisis, ensuring a solution that reflects the aspirations of all Libyan stakeholders.
