President Paul Biya’s anticipated return to Cameroon after extended absence

On Thursday, August 20, at midday, President Paul Biya, accompanied by his wife Chantal and their delegation, was airborne aboard a private Boeing jet, registered P4 – CLA. Their journey commenced in Geneva, with an anticipated arrival in Yaoundé scheduled for late afternoon.
Members of the ruling party, the Democratic Rally of the Cameroonian People (RDPC), have reportedly mobilized extensively, preparing a particularly fervent welcome for the head of state upon his return to Cameroon.
Cameroonian authorities have meticulously orchestrated this presidential homecoming. A prime example is the unprecedented deployment by CRTV, the national public media group, which has assigned 200 of its personnel to provide live radio and television coverage of the event. This return is being elevated to a major national spectacle, with the president’s landing and the 22-kilometer motorcade route from the airport to the palace set to be broadcast and extensively commented upon across their channels.
Over 70 days away from the nation
This return flight, about which neither the Presidency of the Republic of Cameroon nor the government issued any official communication, marks the end of an exactly 74-day absence of the Cameroonian head of state from his country. Such a prolonged period away from the nation fueled widespread speculation regarding his condition, particularly his health. Whispers circulated, with some claiming he was gravely ill and hospitalized following knee surgery, while others suggested routine medical consultations.
Citizens of Cameroon are now eagerly anticipating whether their leader has utilized this extended absence to advance some of his unfulfilled promises. Among these is the formation of a new government, which was announced eight months ago but remains pending. Furthermore, the public awaits the designation of an individual to the newly created position of vice-president, established since last April.
