president tshisekedi urges congolese unity and pride in houston after historic world cup draw
Congolese President Félix Tshisekedi delivered a powerful message of unity and vigilance to the Congolese diaspora in Houston on Wednesday. His address followed the Democratic Republic of Congo’s historic 1-1 draw against Portugal in the FIFA World Cup, a result that marked the nation’s first-ever point in the tournament.
During his engagement with Congolese supporters in the Texan city, the head of state focused on the ongoing security challenges in the eastern regions of the country. He vehemently condemned those he identified as national adversaries, stating, “Their accomplices have gone mad. Be united. Do not let them deceive you, do not let them use regionalism to manipulate you. Refuse to betray your country. There are still sorcerers. We thought they were only in Rwanda, but they have infiltrated us.”
President Tshisekedi also celebrated the outstanding performance of the national football team, the Léopards, emphasizing the immense pride they brought to the nation. “The Léopards have made us proud. I asked FIFA if we advance from the group stage, they will add tickets for the Congolese here. Have no fear. We will provide resources to our ambassador,” he affirmed, highlighting his commitment to supporting the team and its fans.
For President Tshisekedi, the team’s display transcended the football pitch, sending a broader message of resilience. “Today, everyone who feared Cristiano Ronaldo saw how we played, a country like ours, which is at war. Let us act as our national anthem says, ‘Arise, Congolese.’ Show the dignity of being Congolese,” he passionately declared.
The President indicated his imminent departure from the United States to return to the Democratic Republic of Congo. “I will return to Congo to attend to other matters. I came just to bring luck for the first match. We are providing resources so that you can follow the team,” he explained.
Reiterating his focus on the situation in the eastern DRC, President Tshisekedi expressed strong belief in an improved outlook in the coming months. “I have faith that, in the coming days, all of Congo will be liberated. Our brothers and sisters are celebrating in Goma, in Bukavu; we will be together. The enemies had infiltrated, and today, we have learned our lesson. We must now build something greater,” he asserted, projecting optimism for national reconciliation and development.
In a speech that seamlessly wove together themes of sport, national politics, and identity, Félix Tshisekedi implored Congolese citizens to embrace national pride and contribute to various societal sectors. “We started with the Léopards, and we will extend this to all other areas: football, basketball, science, academia. Be proud to be Congolese. It is my mission to restore this pride to you,” he concluded.
The Democratic Republic of Congo secured its inaugural World Cup point in Houston, achieving a 1-1 draw against a formidable Portugal squad.
