Sonko questions the new government’s political foundation
In his first public address since his dismissal on May 22, Ousmane Sonko criticized the newly appointed government of President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. “A nation is serious business, a government is serious business,” Sonko declared during a press conference in Dakar. He argued that the executive branch lacks “any structured political legitimacy,” emphasizing that President Faye must consider Senegal’s institutional power dynamics, particularly as Pastef holds a commanding majority in the National Assembly with 130 out of 165 seats.
Pastef commits to government stability
Despite his strong criticism, Sonko pledged that Pastef would not move to topple the government. “If Pastef wanted to, this government could fall within 72 hours. But we won’t destabilize it. We will support it,” he stated. The National Assembly President stressed the importance of maintaining national stability to reassure investors and prevent a return to political turmoil.
Call for pragmatic political dialogue
Facing rising tensions between former allies, Sonko urged for a “smart, constructive political dialogue.” He warned against repeating the unrest that plagued Senegal between 2021 and 2024, condemning provocations against his supporters while urging calm among the youth. “To achieve peace, both sides must participate,” he emphasized.
