Senegal’s Aminata Touré clarifies governance stance after Sonko’s remarks
Following Ousmane Sonko’s recent public statements challenging President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s policies, Senegalese politician and coordinator of the Diomaye Président coalition, Aminata Touré, stepped forward today to address growing concerns. As tensions escalated, she sought to reassure both the public and political stakeholders that the alleged rift does not signal a retreat from governance commitments or a dilution of promised reforms for the citizens of Senegal.
The former Minister of Justice took direct aim at claims that the administration might be softening its stance on accountability and public debt management. In a firm rebuttal, she reframed the narrative, stating: « Why assume this marks the end of accountability? It could well be the beginning of a more transparent, judicially sound approach to governance. »
The presidential camp has since reiterated that future economic and administrative decisions will be guided by legal rigor and fiscal pragmatism—not political vendettas. Aminata Touré emphasized the critical distinction between judicial process and partisan retaliation, underscoring that judicial rulings cannot be driven by animosity toward political opponents. She cautioned against conflating fairness with hostility, reinforcing the idea that justice must remain impartial and evidence-based.
On the pressing issue of public debt and ongoing discussions with international creditors such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF), government insiders advocate for a grounded, realistic strategy. While the term « restructuring »—often linked to painful memories of 1980s structural adjustment programs involving mass layoffs and reduced social spending—has sparked controversy, the administration now favors the term « debt reprofiling. » This shift in language reflects a deliberate effort to distance the process from past austerity measures and to promote a sustainable economic trajectory that prioritizes the welfare of Senegalese citizens.
