Senegal’s political shake-up: president faye removes prime minister sonko

A period of escalating tensions between President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and his influential Prime Minister, Ousmane Sonko, culminated in the latter’s removal. Sonko’s considerable charisma and political sway were instrumental in bringing the duo to power following their election.

On Friday, May 22, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye of Senegal officially dismissed his Prime Minister and former political ally, Ousmane Sonko. The announcement, delivered by the Secretary-General of the Presidency on national television, confirmed that Sonko’s mandate, along with those of all government ministers and secretaries of state, had concluded. The outgoing cabinet members have been instructed to manage day-to-day affairs until a new government is appointed, though no details regarding Sonko’s successor were immediately provided.

This significant political development follows months of escalating friction between the two leaders, who ascended to power in April 2024 amidst widespread public optimism. Sonko, a charismatic figure and once a mentor to Faye, played a crucial role in their joint path to the presidency. He was a vocal opponent of former President Macky Sall, who served from 2012 to 2024.

Sonko’s own presidential ambitions for the 2024 election were thwarted by a defamation conviction, which resulted in the loss of his civil rights. Consequently, he designated Bassirou Diomaye Faye to run in his stead, a strategic move that ultimately led to their electoral triumph.

However, cracks in their alliance became apparent earlier in May when President Faye publicly critiqued what he described as his Prime Minister’s “excessive personalization” within the ruling party. During a televised interview, Faye had stated, “As long as he remains Prime Minister, it is because he benefits from my confidence. When that is no longer the case, there will be a new Prime Minister.” Responding swiftly to his dismissal, Ousmane Sonko posted on his Facebook account, “Alhamdoulillah. This evening I will sleep with a light heart in Cité Keur Gorgui,” referencing his Dakar residence.
