UNESCO helps kick off Mali’s 27th environment awareness fortnight
The UNESCO office in Mali took part in the official launch ceremony for the 27th edition of the Environment Fortnight, held in Bamako on Saturday, June 6, 2026. The delegation was led by Representative Mr. Ali Mohamed Sinane.
The opening session was presided over by the Minister of State, Minister of Economy and Finance, Mr. Alousséni Sanou, acting on behalf of the Prime Minister and Head of Government. Attendees included government officials, environment ministers from AES member states (Burkina Faso and Niger), representatives from national institutions, technical and financial partners, civil society, the private sector, and media representatives.
This year’s event aims to rally national initiatives to heighten community awareness about protecting natural resources and promoting sustainable environmental practices.
Running from June 5 to 15, 2026, the fortnight is structured around two core themes:
“Climate crisis and solutions for safer, more resilient, and sustainable futures,” aligned with World Environment Day;
“Pastures: recognize, respect, restore,” tied to the International Day for Combating Desertification and Drought.
Through its involvement, UNESCO underscores its commitment to working alongside the Malian Government to raise environmental awareness, champion best practices, and support concrete actions that drive sustainable, resilient development.
