Political crisis deepens as opposition leaders face harsh sentences

The Collectif des Partis Politiques d’Opposition du Tchad (GCAP) has become the latest target in what civil society groups describe as a systematic campaign to silence dissent. During a press briefing held in Bololo, N’Djaména, Hisseine Abdoulaye, spokesperson for the opposition coalition Les Patriotes, condemned the eight-year prison sentences handed down to eight GCAP leaders, calling the verdicts a clear violation of democratic principles.

The political landscape in Chad has grown increasingly volatile, with security challenges compounding the crisis. In the Lac Tchad region, Boko Haram attacks on state forces have intensified, while intercommunal violence in the east, particularly in Wadi Fira, has claimed dozens of lives. These developments have exposed critical weaknesses in the national security apparatus and fueled widespread instability.

Legal proceedings under scrutiny for procedural irregularities

Les Patriotes allege that the legal proceedings against the eight leaders were rushed and lacked transparency. They point to the involvement of the Attorney General, the Ministry of Territorial Administration, and the Supreme Court, accusing these institutions of coordinating a politically motivated campaign to dismantle the opposition coalition. The party has dismissed the charges—ranging from illegal assembly to rebellion—as baseless, insisting there is no credible evidence to support the accusations.

International community urged to intervene

The opposition coalition has called on human rights organizations, international bodies, and defenders of the rule of law to closely monitor the situation. Their demands include the immediate and unconditional release of the eight leaders and all political prisoners. Les Patriotes has also urged citizens to mobilize in defense of democratic values and national unity, warning that further repression could spiral into deeper political and social unrest.

The party’s statement underscores growing concerns that Chad’s justice system is being weaponized to suppress opposition voices. With security threats persisting and political freedoms eroding, the country stands at a critical juncture where decisive action from both domestic and international actors may be necessary to restore stability.
