Recent reports indicate a growing backlash against the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) contentious ruling. The Egyptian club Pharco FC has declared an indefinite boycott of all CAF-organized tournaments, citing the decision against Senegal as “unjust, politically motivated, and contrary to the spirit of sportsmanship.”

Pharco FC is not alone in its stance; numerous other clubs from Egypt and Algeria have voiced their solidarity with Senegal and are considering similar boycotts of continental competitions. Prominent teams such as Mamelodi Sundowns from South Africa and Simba SC from Tanzania have condemned the ruling as “shameful,” warning that it sets a dangerous precedent for the future of African football.

The controversy stems from CAF’s judgment that Senegal forfeited the AFCON 2025 final against Morocco, resulting in a 0-3 loss. The official ruling stated that Senegal violated regulations by temporarily leaving the field to protest a penalty awarded to Morocco late in regular time.

What makes the situation particularly contentious is that the match eventually resumed after a ten-minute stoppage. Senegal returned to play, secured a 1-0 lead in extra time with a goal from Pape Gueye, and even celebrated lifting the trophy in Rabat on January 18.

However, following a formal complaint from Morocco, CAF unexpectedly altered the outcome, declaring Morocco the 3-0 winner and awarding them the championship title.

This reversal immediately sent shockwaves throughout the global football community. Many international sports publications have described it as one of the most “bizarre and controversial” decisions in modern football history, highlighting its unprecedented nature in a continental championship.

Football experts have widely questioned the fairness and legitimacy of the decision. They argue that if Senegal’s actions truly constituted a serious infraction, the referee and match organizers should have halted the game or declared a forfeiture immediately, rather than allowing the match to conclude and then changing the result retrospectively after Morocco’s appeal.

The Senegalese Football Federation has since confirmed its intention to appeal the ruling to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and FIFA. African media outlets have also reported that the Senegalese national team is contemplating withdrawing from future CAF competitions due to what they perceive as unfair treatment.

This incident severely tarnishes the reputation of African football, especially given that the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) is the continent’s most prestigious national team tournament. There are significant concerns that if this crisis continues, the credibility and competitiveness of CAF-organized tournaments could be gravely jeopardized in the years to come.
