High-tension arrest in Ouagadougou

Imam Mohamad Ishaq Kindo’s arrest unfolded on Tuesday afternoon, carried out by masked police and military personnel. The operation, occurring just before the Muslim holiday of Eid, created intense friction between security forces and worshippers present at the scene. Accounts from the imam’s close circle indicate several individuals sustained injuries during the apprehension. His current whereabouts remain undisclosed.

Critiques of a controversial bill

Just two days prior to his detention, an audio recording widely shared across social media platforms captured the imam’s strong condemnation of a legislative proposal. This bill, adopted in March, aims to regulate the exercise of religious freedoms within Burkina Faso. In his sermon, Mohamad Ishaq Kindo cautioned authorities against any intention to prohibit public prayers. He also urged the nation’s leaders to “deeply consider the ramifications of their decisions before acting.”

Protest dispersed by security forces

Hours after the arrest, hundreds of citizens gathered in Ouagadougou, demanding the immediate release of the respected imam. Security forces reportedly dispersed the crowd using tear gas. In response, the Federation of Islamic Associations of Burkina appealed to Muslim faithful for calm, restraint, and serenity.
