AS FAR challenges CAF over referee choice for Champions League final
The Moroccan football club AS FAR has strongly opposed the Confederation of African Football’s decision to appoint referee Jean-Jacques Ndala for the upcoming CAF Champions League final against South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns.
With the first leg of the final scheduled for May 17 in Pretoria, tensions are escalating as the club expresses serious concerns about the official’s suitability for the high-stakes match.
AS FAR demands immediate referee replacement
The Rabat-based club has formally requested the CAF to reconsider its decision, citing Ndala’s controversial officiating during the chaotic 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final between Morocco and Senegal. The club’s objections stem from several questionable decisions made in that match, including the failure to penalize Senegalese players after they temporarily left the field on January 18 at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.
Additionally, AS FAR has highlighted the irony of Ndala’s appointment, given that he was previously suspended by FIFA from officiating in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers due to his performance in the same controversial final. The club is urging the CAF to take swift action and replace the 38-year-old referee immediately.
Why AS FAR is demanding change
AS FAR’s stance reflects broader concerns within Moroccan football circles about Ndala’s ability to fairly officiate matches involving Moroccan teams. The club’s formal complaint to the CAF underscores its commitment to ensuring a fair and transparent final, free from any perceived bias or controversy.
The situation has drawn significant attention as AS FAR prepares to compete in its first CAF Champions League final in 41 years, adding to the pressure on the governing body to address the club’s concerns promptly.
