AS Monaco suffers dramatic late collapse against Strasbourg in Ligue 1 finale
AS Monaco, leading 4-1 with half-time approaching, suffered a dramatic 5-4 defeat to Strasbourg in the final match of the Ligue 1 season. The loss capped a campaign that ended with the club in seventh place.
With Lille fresh off a setback, manager Sébastien Pocognoli switched to a 4-2-3-1 formation. Denis Zakaria lined up alongside Lamine Camara in midfield, Ansu Fati operated as the attacking midfielder behind Folarin Balogun, and Simon Adingra returned on the left flank. Under the watch of 250 traveling supporters in Alsace, Monaco started aggressively, pressing high and recovering the ball in dangerous areas.
By the 10th minute, Lamine Camara had already put Monaco ahead after intercepting a misplaced pass from El Mourabet, rifling the ball into the top corner. Strasbourg pulled one back against the run of play when Martial Godo equalized in the 34th minute. But the Senegalese midfielder restored Monaco’s lead minutes later with a curling strike under the bar, before Ansu Fati made it 3-1 just before the interval.
Ten minutes after the restart, Folarin Balogun’s effort was deflected into his own net by Ismaël Doukouré, making it 4-1. However, Strasbourg staged an astonishing comeback. Diego Moreira pulled one back, Sébastian Nanasi leveled the score in the 72nd minute, and Godo then restored Strasbourg’s lead with a delicate lob over the keeper just before the final whistle. Paris Brunner, introduced late on, saw his header cannon off the crossbar in the 87th minute, leaving Monaco empty-handed in the season finale.

Pocognoli admits Monaco lacked mental resilience
« We started well and controlled much of the first half. With a 4-1 lead, some may have assumed the match was over, but we conceded immediately after, which reignited the game, » reflected Sébastien Pocognoli at the post-match press conference. He went on to highlight a recurring issue: « This isn’t the first time this season we’ve collapsed when leading. Our mental strength has often been our weak point. » He concluded: « We simply lacked the consistency needed to finish what we started. »

A season of missed opportunities ends in frustration
Seventh in the standings at full-time, AS Monaco completes the 2025-2026 season without securing a European spot, following two consecutive campaigns in the Champions League. Pocognoli addressed the shortcomings directly: « My role is to assess what went wrong. There will be a thorough review. When I arrived, I set out to instill an identity, cohesion, and clear principles that have remained unchanged. It’s essential to preserve the positives and build on them for next year. » With the transfer window looming, the summer promises to be pivotal in reshaping the club’s sporting project.
