Bénin and Niger deepen ties with border, security and trade talks

Diplomatic breakthrough unfolds as Benin’s President Romuald Wadagni meets Niger’s leader General Abdourahamane Tiani in Niamey. This high-level encounter, held on June 2, 2026, marks a pivotal moment in relations between the two West African neighbors after nearly three years of strained political, security, and economic ties.

The discussions centered on three critical priorities: combating terrorism, reopening the shared border, and reviving bilateral trade. These issues have long strained relations since the July 2023 military takeover in Niamey. The economic stakes are especially high—Niger, a landlocked nation, has relied heavily on Benin’s port of Cotonou for imports and exports. Prolonged border closures have disrupted trade flows, strained supply chains, and impacted communities on both sides.

The security dimension cannot be overstated. With terrorist groups expanding their reach across the Sahel, both countries now recognize that enhanced collaboration is essential to safeguard their border regions. While no immediate border reopening was announced, the meeting signals a clear shift toward cooperation.
