Morocco to occupy the first seat of the 81st General Assembly
Morocco has been selected by a random draw to occupy the inaugural seat at the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, scheduled to commence this September in New York.
During a plenary session of the General Assembly held this Tuesday in New York, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres conducted the customary drawing of lots to determine which nation would occupy the leading seat for the upcoming session. In adherence to established UN protocol, Morocco was the country chosen for this distinguished position.
“The Secretary-General has just chosen the name of the country that will occupy the first seat in the General Assembly hall for its next session. It is Morocco,” announced UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric during a press briefing, expressing satisfaction with the outcome of this selection.
The same plenary session also saw the election of Khalilur Rahman, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh, as the President of the 81st General Assembly. Furthermore, member states proceeded to elect the nations that will serve as Vice-Presidents for this session, a list that includes the United States, China, France, the United Kingdom, Russia, Egypt, Afghanistan, and Gabon.
As the universal body bringing together all 193 UN member states, the General Assembly stands as the organization’s principal multilateral forum, where each nation holds an equal voting right. Its key responsibilities encompass approving the UN budget, electing non-permanent members to the Security Council, and appointing the Secretary-General.
