Bénin and Nigeria strengthen ties with high-level diplomatic visit
Nigeria’s top political leadership gathered in Lagos on June 1st to formally welcome Benin’s newly elected President, Romuald Wadagni, marking his first international visit since taking office.
President Wadagni was greeted at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport’s presidential pavilion by Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, Governor of Lagos State, underscoring the significance of the occasion.
«The grandeur of this reception reflects Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to fostering strong ties with Benin’s new leadership and the transformative vision it brings,» a statement from the Beninese Presidency highlighted.
During the brief visit, President Wadagni held high-level discussions with Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in the Presidential Villa. Both leaders engaged in «in-depth talks on key areas of bilateral cooperation—security, trade, and regional integration—guided by mutual trust and shared long-term goals,» as confirmed by Benin’s Presidency.
Bilateral relations between Benin and Nigeria have long been defined by deep economic and cultural interdependence. This visit is set to «reinforce and redefine the Cotonou-Abuja partnership,» ensuring a more dynamic and forward-looking collaboration, according to Beninese authorities.
The visit also signals a bold shift in Benin’s foreign policy under President Wadagni’s leadership: «a diplomacy rooted in proximity, proactivity, and a steadfast push for collective sovereignty across West Africa,» explained the Beninese Presidency and State Protocol.
As West Africa’s largest economy, Nigeria plays a pivotal role in Benin’s economic stability, particularly in agriculture and services, making it Benin’s top trading partner.
