Benin and the EU forge stronger ties in brussels

Benin’s President Romuald Wadagni concluded a pivotal working visit to Brussels on June 24, meeting with top European Union officials to lay the groundwork for an enhanced partnership designed to tackle evolving development challenges.

During his engagements, he met with key EU leaders including European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, underscoring the depth of the relationship between Cotonou and Brussels.

The discussions with Costa focused on revitalizing bilateral cooperation frameworks, with both sides emphasizing a shared vision rooted in mutual trust, stability, and aligned objectives.

Wadagni and von der Leyen further explored ways to deepen the EU-Benin partnership, reaffirming their commitment to accelerating collaboration across critical sectors.

Three strategic priorities emerged from their talks, beginning with economic transformation and innovation. This pillar highlights industrialization, job creation, the expansion of Cotonou Port’s economic corridors, local agricultural processing, and youth vocational training.

The second priority addresses territorial development and northern Benin’s security challenges. Efforts will include bolstering local communities against violent extremism through improved infrastructure and expanded economic opportunities.

The third priority centers on sustainable finance, particularly through the Global Green Bond Initiative, which aims to fund sustainable infrastructure in renewable energy, transportation, and agriculture.

Von der Leyen noted, « Benin stands as a key partner for the European Union in West Africa. This relationship is built on mutual trust and a shared drive to enhance living standards for all. »

For Benin, strengthening this partnership is also about positioning the country as a regional hub for growth, connectivity, and investment across West Africa.
