Dressed in a dark suit with a blue tie, Romuald Wadagni stepped forward to take the oath of office, raising his right hand as he pledged to “uphold and defend the Constitution” and accept legal consequences for any breach of that vow.

A 12-gun salute echoed across the esplanade as the new president was declared Grand Master of national orders. Moments later, the Chief of Staff presented him with the national flag, marking the formal transfer of leadership.

In his inaugural address, Wadagni outlined his commitment to serving Bénin with unwavering integrity, courage, and dedication. He vowed to uphold the rule of law while ensuring fundamental freedoms for all citizens. His economic vision focused on inclusive growth, promising that every household would benefit from the nation’s progress.

On matters of national security, he reaffirmed Bénin’s resolve to combat terrorism, stating that the country would remain steadfast against any threats to its stability. Turning to regional cooperation, he emphasized the importance of solidarity among neighboring nations, calling cooperation “a necessity, not an option.”

The ceremony drew high-profile attendees, including former Bénin presidents Nicéphore Soglo and Thomas Boni Yayi, as well as delegates from 16 foreign nations. Among them were representatives from neighboring countries such as Togo, Nigeria, Burkina Faso, and Niger—relations with which have faced recent tensions. The new president extended a warm welcome to all guests, signaling his intent to strengthen cross-border partnerships.
