Bénin’s president in Niamey: a pivotal step towards diplomatic reconciliation
Bénin’s President Romuald Wadagni arrived in Niamey on Tuesday for an official visit, a significant diplomatic move that could pave the way for normalizing relations between Bénin and Niger. These ties have been severely strained since the July 2023 coup d’état that brought Nigerien military leaders to power.
Upon his arrival in the Nigerien capital, the Bénin Head of State was greeted by Niger’s transitional president, General Abdourahamane Tiani. This meeting marks the first time a Bénin president has visited Niger since the military regime took control, occurring amidst a period of persistent political and security tensions between the two neighboring nations.
Following a prior stop in Nigeria the day before, President Wadagni chose to dedicate his second regional trip to his Nigerien counterpart, underscoring the importance Bénin places on close regional relationships. According to the Bénin presidency, this initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance dialogue with all countries bordering Bénin.
Discussions between the two leaders are expected to primarily address critical security concerns. Both nations face a growing jihadist threat along their shared borders. For several years, northern Bénin and western Niger have been recurrent targets for attacks by armed groups affiliated with extremist movements operating across the Sahel region.
Prior indications of a potential thaw in relations emerged during President Wadagni’s inauguration in Cotonou, which saw the attendance of Nigerien Prime Minister Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine. Furthermore, Nigerien state media have recently amplified messages highlighting the deep historical and cultural bonds shared between the populations of both countries.
After his stop in Niamey, President Wadagni is scheduled to continue his regional tour to Burkina Faso, another nation governed by a military regime and an ally of Niger within the Alliance of Sahel States. This sequence of diplomatic engagements is widely interpreted as a concerted effort to re-establish dialogue with key Sahelian capitals and to foster a climate of regional cooperation.
