Gabon revamps strategy to position local businesses in the African continental market

Gabon is actively accelerating its efforts to maximize its share of the African market. On Friday, September 11, 2026, on the sidelines of a technical workshop dedicated to validating the updated national strategy for implementing the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), the Minister of Commerce, SMEs-SMIs, and Youth Entrepreneurship held talks with Adama Ekberg Coulibaly, the Resident Representative of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA).

This high-level meeting highlights the government’s commitment to strengthening Gabon’s role in intra-African commerce, ensuring domestic enterprises are fully equipped to seize the vast opportunities presented by the continental free trade zone.

Strategic framework for continental integration

During the discussions, the UNECA representative stressed how vital it is for Gabon to establish a revised national blueprint to navigate this massive continental market. He noted that such a framework will enable the country to clearly define its commercial priorities and provide structured support to economic players looking to expand their reach across African borders.

A major focus of this revised roadmap is directed toward small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), as well as young entrepreneurs, who form the backbone of the national economy. The updated approach aims to unlock specific mechanisms that facilitate market access and integrate these local businesses into regional and continental supply chains.

Collaborative support for economic transformation

UNECA has reiterated its commitment to assisting Gabon in executing this strategic plan. This partnership will focus on building national capacities, fostering private sector growth, and enhancing the overall competitiveness of Gabonese firms.

For the authorities in Libreville, the ultimate goal is to translate continental trade integration into tangible advantages for the local population. This includes driving business expansion, generating sustainable employment, diversifying the economy, and adding value to Gabonese products.

The validation of this revised national strategy marks a decisive turning point, preparing Gabon to navigate continental competition and secure its share of economic growth. Through this initiative, the administration intends to leverage the AfCFTA as a powerful engine for structural economic reform and private sector development.
