Burkina Faso secures World Bank funding to boost health system resilience

WASHINGTON — The World Bank has approved a groundbreaking financing package totaling €142 million (approximately $150 million) from the International Development Association (IDA) and an additional $17 million grant from the Global Financing Facility (GFF). This funding will support the Performance and Resilience Strengthening of the Health System Project (PRPRSS) in Burkina Faso.

The initiative targets adolescents, women, and children under five, focusing on enhancing disease surveillance, improving health and nutrition service utilization, and expanding access to care across the nation. Special attention will be given to internally displaced persons and underserved communities with limited healthcare access.

«Human development is the cornerstone of social inclusion and remains a top priority for the World Bank. This project aligns with our commitment to bolstering resilience and addressing urgent health sector challenges. It complements the recently approved Human Capital Protection Project, valued at $100.4 million, which aims to enhance the delivery of essential social services,» stated Hamoud Abdel Wedoud Kamil, World Bank Resident Representative in Burkina Faso.

The project is fully aligned with the World Bank’s West and Central Africa regional strategy, which emphasizes strengthening core institutions to improve the provision of basic social services and reinforce the social contract.

«Ensuring access to healthcare for women, adolescents, and children is one of the most impactful investments governments can make to drive development and prosperity. The GFF is proud to support Burkina Faso in building a robust, resilient health system that delivers care to these critical populations, even in the most vulnerable areas,» emphasized Luc Laviolette, Head of the GFF Secretariat.

«This timely initiative will significantly enhance Burkina Faso’s capacity to prepare for and respond to health emergencies while elevating the quality and accessibility of health and nutrition services. It will also reinforce the World Bank’s ongoing support for the Ministry of Health’s reforms aimed at improving governance, equity, and sustainable financing in the health sector,» added Moussa Dieng, World Bank Health Portfolio Manager.
