Burkina Faso unveils massive $10 billion energy plan to electrify millions by 2030
The Burkinabè government is launching an unprecedented energy drive to tackle one of the country’s most pressing challenges. Through its newly unveiled 2026-2030 National Energy Pact, Burkina Faso aims to mobilize over 10.3 billion US dollars to connect nearly 18 million additional citizens to the national power grid by 2030.
This ambitious plan marks a historic shift in Burkina Faso’s energy landscape. Recognizing the severe impact of energy poverty on economic growth and social development, authorities are rolling out a staggering financial and technical roadmap: mobilizing 6,235 billion West African CFA francs (approximately 10.39 billion US dollars) to revolutionize the nation’s energy infrastructure by the end of the decade.
The core objective is to bring electricity to 17.9 million more people, including millions living in rural areas still shrouded in darkness. This initiative promises sweeping transformations, from rural electrification to broader socio-economic uplift.
Driving the “Mission 300” initiative
This monumental effort is not an isolated endeavor. It aligns seamlessly with the “Mission 300,” a high-profile international alliance co-led by the World Bank and the African Development Bank (AfDB). This continent-wide program aims to lift millions out of energy poverty across Africa.
By aligning its National Energy Pact 2026-2030 with this global movement, Burkina Faso is securing strategic partnerships to turn ambitious political promises into tangible infrastructure on the ground.
Energy sovereignty and a diversified mix
The massive investments are designed to address two critical priorities: scaling up domestic production and reducing reliance on costly imports. To break free from energy dependence, Burkina Faso’s strategy emphasizes decentralized infrastructure and renewable energy sources, particularly solar power.
The funds will expand the national interconnected grid managed by SONABEL, the national electricity utility, while also deploying decentralized solutions such as mini-grids and standalone solar kits tailored for remote rural communities.
A catalyst for national economic growth
This 6,200 billion FCFA energy blueprint is more than just a lighting project—it’s a cornerstone for local industrialization. Reliable and affordable energy is the linchpin for modernizing essential services like healthcare and education, fostering job creation, and supporting the processing of agricultural and mineral resources.
By connecting 17.9 million additional people within four years, Burkina Faso seeks to lay the foundation for lasting economic sovereignty. A transformative leap for this Sahel nation.
