Burundi reaffirms unwavering support for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara

Sahara : le Burundi réaffirme son appui à Rabat
Minister Nasser Bourita met with Edouard Bizimana, Burundi’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, in Rabat to discuss regional cooperation.

On Friday, June 19, 2026, the Republic of Burundi once again declared its constant and unwavering support for the sovereignty of Morocco over its entire territory. This diplomatic stance was formalized in Rabat following high-level discussions between Edouard Bizimana, the Burundian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration, and Development Cooperation, and his Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita.

During this official working visit to the Kingdom, a joint statement was issued in which Bujumbura confirmed its endorsement of the Moroccan autonomy initiative. Burundi recognizes this plan as the only credible and realistic framework for resolving the regional dispute. Additionally, the Burundian government expressed its continued backing of United Nations-led efforts to facilitate negotiations based strictly on this proposal.

Renewed diplomatic momentum for the Sahara

This latest declaration reinforces the growing trend of African nations aligning with Rabat on its national cause. Burundi also took the opportunity to welcome the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2797. According to the delegation, this resolution further cements the autonomy plan under Moroccan sovereignty as the essential foundation for achieving a just, lasting, and mutually acceptable political settlement.

The meeting highlights Morocco’s ongoing success in expanding its diplomatic reach and consolidating international support for its territorial integrity. This renewed commitment from Burundi marks another step forward in the deepening bilateral relations between the two nations.
