Caf champions league final referee named for Maroc vs South Africa clash
The Congolese referee Jean-Jacques Ndala has been chosen by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to officiate the first leg of the CAF Champions League final between Mamelodi Sundowns and AS FAR. The highly anticipated match is scheduled for 17 May in Pretoria, South Africa.
The 38-year-old match official has previously been linked to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final between Senegal and Morocco, a game that sparked significant debate. Despite receiving criticism for some of his decisions, CAF has continued to place its trust in him, as evidenced by his recent assignments in major continental club competitions.
Pretoria to host the Champions League opener
The CAF Champions League final first leg will take place at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria, the home ground of Mamelodi Sundowns. The return leg is set to be played in Rabat exactly one week later. Ndala’s appointment underscores the confidence CAF has in his ability to handle high-pressure fixtures.
Since the AFCON 2025, the Congolese referee has officiated several key matches, including the Group Stage clash between Young Africans and JS Kabylie on 5 February and the CAF Confederation Cup quarter-final between Al-Masry and CR Belouizdad on 14 March.
Controversial final leaves a lasting impression
Ndala’s reputation remains closely tied to the AFCON 2025 final held in Rabat. During that match, he disallowed a goal from Senegal for a foul called before the play was completed, preventing the use of VAR. Shortly after, a penalty was awarded to Morocco following VAR review for a foul on Brahim Díaz.
These decisions led to an immediate reaction from the Senegal bench, with players temporarily leaving the field in protest. The match resumed after several minutes, with Senegal eventually winning 1-0 in extra time. However, the outcome was later revised in March 2026, when CAF awarded Morocco a 3-0 victory, citing Senegal’s temporary walkout as a violation of competition regulations.
CAF stands by Ndala despite controversy
In the face of ongoing scrutiny, CAF continues to entrust Ndala with officiating major continental fixtures. According to the International Football Association Board (IFAB) regulations, referee decisions are final and cannot be overturned after a match concludes. The first leg of the CAF Champions League final is set to kick off on 17 May in Pretoria, with the return leg scheduled for 24 May in Rabat.
