Cameroon’s vice-presidency: is a second biya son emerging for succession?

Recent political insights, emerging around June 22, 2026, suggest a significant shift in Cameroon’s political landscape: beyond Franck Biya, another figure with close ties to President Paul Biya is reportedly laying the groundwork for a potential succession.

Recent political insights suggest that after Franck Biya, another prominent figure closely associated with the president is actively cultivating influence and preparing for a potential leadership role.

Louis Paul Motaze, identified as Franck Biya’s cousin and an adopted son of the President of the Republic, appears to be capitalizing on a shift in sentiment among Southern elites. It is understood that these influential figures have communicated their reservations about Franck Biya’s candidacy directly to the head of state. The considerable sway held by Southern elites within the Cameroonian public administration is widely acknowledged.

Motaze’s career trajectory underscores his deep entrenchment in the nation’s power structures. He has served as Director General of the CNPS, held the portfolio of Minister of Economy, Planning and Regional Development following structural adjustments, transitioned through the esteemed position of Secretary General of the Presidency of the Republic (SGPR), and currently oversees the Ministry of Finance. Many observers consider him to be the most influential individual after President Paul Biya, particularly in terms of his extensive network.

Strategic influence from Batoufam

Motaze’s strategic reach is far-reaching. He reportedly exerts significant control over media outlets, with critics noting a conspicuous absence of negative coverage. His influence extends to television media, and he maintains robust connections within business circles across all regions of the country, with a particularly strong presence in the West. His relationships with traditional chiefs in the West are considered highly strategic. Among his key allies is the charismatic Nayang Toukam Innocent, whose leadership facilitated the hosting of African traditional chiefs’ gatherings. Nayang Toukam Innocent frequently presides over sectoral meetings of the Governor of the West region. Five years ago, Louis Paul Motaze personally met with him at the royal palace of Batoufam, accompanied by a delegation that included a prominent businessman and head of Biopharma. This chief has notably elevated Batoufam to become the 20th leading eco-tourism destination globally, as recognized by the International Social Tourism Organization.

Motaze’s reputation as a shrewd strategist is well-established. His ability to distance himself from businessman Amougou Belinga in the wake of the Martinez Zogo assassination scandal highlights his political agility. A notable positive attribute often ascribed to him is his lack of attachment to tribalism, even within his inner circle. However, questions remain regarding his performance since 2007, when he first entered the core of Cameroon’s governance through the MINEPAT. Louis Paul Motaze now faces competition from his cousin Franck Biya, who is reportedly protected by First Lady Chantal Biya and Oswald Baboke. Another contender is Ferdinand Ngoh Ngoh, who, despite his merits, is perceived as less generous, a stark contrast to the image cultivated by Motaze’s associates. Franck Biya, on the other hand, is said to inspire a certain detachment among the youth of the South.
