Chad denies un claims of civilian casualties in Lake Chad strikes

The Chadian government has categorically denied accusations from the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights regarding civilian casualties during military strikes in the Lake Chad basin targeting Boko Haram positions. The response was delivered in N’Djamena by the Minister of Communication and government spokesperson, Gassim Chérif Mahamat.

In a press briefing, the spokesperson dismissed the allegations as « attempts to discredit the Chadian army, » asserting that they undermine the credibility and dignity of national armed forces. He emphasized that the Chadian military remains fully committed to combating terrorism across the Sahel and the Lake Chad region, an area plagued by recurrent armed group attacks for years.

The government maintains that military operations are conducted with strict adherence to international humanitarian law norms. It claims that all precautions are taken to minimize collateral damage and protect civilian lives during strikes targeting Boko Haram strongholds.

Government counters UN report amid ongoing regional tensions

This rebuttal follows a United Nations Human Rights report suggesting significant civilian losses from aerial operations conducted by Chadian forces in the region. The document has reignited debates over the conduct of military operations in this volatile area, where clashes between security forces and armed groups remain frequent.

N’Djamena strongly disputes these findings, arguing they lack sufficient substantiation. Authorities insist that defense and security forces continue to play a pivotal role in stabilizing the region, standing at the forefront against terrorist threats.

Chadian officials urge a « balanced and responsible » interpretation of the security situation and reaffirm their commitment to protecting civilian populations. They also advocate for enhanced international cooperation to better coordinate efforts against extremist groups active in the Lake Chad basin.

Amid diplomatic tensions, the Chadian government reasserts its determination to continue operations against Boko Haram while defending the legitimacy and professionalism of its military in an increasingly complex security environment.
