Chad strengthens digital ties with US tech giants in Washington

The government of Chad is advancing its digital transformation agenda with a high-level mission to Washington, D.C. From May 23 to 31, 2026, a delegation led by the Minister of Telecommunications, Digital Economy and Digitalization, Haliki Choua Mahamat, engaged with key American stakeholders to forge strategic partnerships in the technology sector.

Expanding digital infrastructure through international collaboration

This official visit reflects N’Djamena’s determination to modernize the country’s digital landscape by attracting foreign investment, expertise, and cutting-edge technologies. The delegation held discussions with officials from the U.S. State Department and Commerce Department, as well as representatives from major tech companies specializing in digital infrastructure, connectivity, data centers, cybersecurity, and e-health.

Among the key partners engaged were InterSystems, Starlink, Cybastion, Vertiv, and 19Labs. These meetings focused on priority projects including expanding internet coverage, strengthening national digital infrastructure, upgrading public services, enhancing cybersecurity, and deploying connected health solutions.

Addressing critical connectivity challenges

A central topic of the mission was the partnership with Starlink, Elon Musk’s satellite internet provider. Chadian authorities raised concerns about service quality and pricing on national territory, noting that rates were less competitive compared to other African countries. Improving internet access remains a strategic priority, especially as traditional telecom infrastructure struggles to meet growing demand from public administrations, businesses, and citizens.

Transforming healthcare through digital innovation

Beyond telecommunications, Chad is prioritizing the digitalization of its healthcare system. Discussions with American partners explored initiatives to digitize medical facilities, including the country’s five university teaching hospitals, 23 regional hospitals, and over 1,000 health centers. The goal is to enhance medical data management, patient monitoring, and the efficiency of health services through digital technologies.

Building local digital expertise

The Washington mission also addressed human capital development, with a focus on training, technology transfer, and strengthening national skills in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and digital professions. This approach aims to cultivate a robust domestic tech ecosystem and reduce reliance on foreign expertise.

From dialogue to concrete outcomes

For Chad, this diplomatic and economic outreach underscores the country’s commitment to leveraging digital technology as a driver of economic diversification and modernization. As the nation faces significant connectivity and digital inclusion challenges, authorities are now focused on converting these discussions into tangible projects that will improve infrastructure, public services, and competitiveness in Africa’s digital economy.
