Côte d’Ivoire champions human-centered migration governance at un forum
The Republic of Côte d’Ivoire is making its mark on the global stage by actively participating in the second session of the International Migration Review Forum (IMRF) at the United Nations headquarters in New York. This strategic engagement underscores the country’s commitment to a migration governance model rooted in cooperation, human dignity, and sustainable development.
The forum, centered on advancing the implementation of the 2018 Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (adopted in Marrakech), brings together nations to address critical challenges in human mobility worldwide.
Representing Côte d’Ivoire’s Minister of Planning and Development, Dr. Souleymane Diarrassouba, Dr. Hinin Moustapha, Director-General of the National Office of Population (ONP), participated in high-level discussions. He highlighted the Ivory Coast’s progress in key migration management areas, including strengthening migration data systems, reducing vulnerabilities, combating discrimination, and fostering international cooperation.
Data-driven migration policies: a cornerstone of Côte d’Ivoire’s strategy
Dr. Moustapha emphasized the transformative efforts in migration statistics, aiming to enhance understanding of migration dynamics. Côte d’Ivoire has undertaken a structural overhaul of its data collection and analysis systems to ensure reliable, up-to-date, and disaggregated information. This initiative supports evidence-based policymaking and positions the country as a regional leader in migration data governance.
A milestone in this endeavor was the 2025 national migration survey, reflecting the government’s determination to set new standards in African migration governance through robust, data-driven approaches.
Protecting migrants and fostering inclusion
Beyond statistics, Côte d’Ivoire prioritizes the protection of migrants through integrated care and reintegration mechanisms supported by inclusive social policies. This holistic approach ensures better support for migrant populations and reduces their vulnerability.
The fight against discrimination remains a central pillar of the country’s strategy. Authorities have intensified awareness campaigns and reinforced institutional frameworks to build a more inclusive society that upholds human rights.
Global solidarity: the key to addressing migration challenges
The Ivorian delegation at the forum advocated for international cooperation based on solidarity and shared responsibility among nations. Abidjan argues that migration challenges cannot be effectively addressed without coordinated action between countries of origin, transit, and destination.
Côte d’Ivoire’s participation at the IMRF reflects a renewed vision of migration. Rather than viewing human mobility solely as a security or social challenge, the country sees it as a strategic opportunity for economic, cultural, and human development.
With a long-standing tradition of hospitality and openness, Côte d’Ivoire is committed to advancing migration governance that fosters shared prosperity. This vision is built on human dignity, inter-people solidarity, and the intelligent use of data to inform policy decisions.
