Deadly jihadist assaults in Burkina Faso claim dozens of lives
In a series of coordinated terrorist attacks across Burkina Faso, at least fifty soldiers and members of the Volontaires pour la Défense de la Patrie (VDP) were killed on July 4. The assaults, claimed by the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIMAQ)—a Qaeda-affiliated faction—targeted multiple regions, including the north, northwest, and southwest.
The offensive began before dawn, with militants storming the Di military camp in the Sourou Province. After intense clashes, the attackers breached the base before withdrawing, leaving behind a trail of destruction. According to local accounts, 23 soldiers and 11 VDP members perished in the assault. The jihadist group later released footage purportedly showing 22 fallen military personnel in the aftermath of the raid.
The JNIMAQ also asserted responsibility for two additional strikes in the southwest and central-western regions, specifically in Dalan and Tiéré. These attacks resulted in the deaths of at least 18 soldiers, alongside significant material damage reported in both locations.
Earlier that same day, the militants targeted Thiou and Séguénéga in the northern part of the country. Though no fatalities were reported in these incidents, eyewitnesses described arson attacks on civilian vehicles as the jihadists made their escape.
As of now, neither the Burkinabe military nor the government has issued an official response regarding the attacks. Meanwhile, unverified footage of the raids continues to circulate on social media, amplifying the gravity of the situation.
