DRC and Burundi leaders meet in Kinshasa to tackle security and health crises

President Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo of the Democratic Republic of Congo welcomed his Burundian counterpart, Évariste Ndayishimiye, to Kinshasa on Monday, June 22, 2026. The discussions, held at the Cité de l’Union africaine, marked a state visit by President Ndayishimiye, who also holds the position of current Chairperson of the African Union.

The engagement between the two heads of state began with a private meeting before expanding to include broader bilateral delegations. The central focus of their talks was the reinforcement of cooperation between the two nations across a range of shared interests.

A critical item on the agenda was the security situation in the eastern region of the DRC. The leaders addressed Burundi’s ongoing support for the FARDC in their operations against Rwandan military occupation forces.

The dialogue also extended to joint public health efforts, particularly the response to the Ebola virus epidemic (Bundibugyo strain). Both parties underscored the urgent necessity of strengthening cross-border surveillance to halt the spread of the virus.

On Tuesday, June 23, President Ndayishimiye is scheduled to meet with the task force responsible for coordinating the health response to the Ebola resurgence, which is impacting three eastern provinces. Following this, he plans to visit the Cultural and Artistic Centre for Central African Countries.

This high-level summit is set to conclude with a joint press conference on Tuesday, where both presidents will address the outcomes of their discussions.
