DRC and Republic of Congo President Meet to Accelerate Integration Projects
The president of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo, visited Brazzaville on July 3rd.
He arrived at the Majestic River boat, flying the Congolese flag, and crossed the Pool Malebo before being welcomed by the Prime Minister of Congo, Anatole Collinet Makosso, at the Beach in Brazzaville.
The visit was part of the regular dynamic of consultation between President Denis Sassou N’Guesso and Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi, who aim to deepen bilateral cooperation and accelerate integration projects with significant economic impact.
At the center of the discussions was the Brazzaville-Kinshasa road-rail bridge project, considered one of the most structuring projects in the region. This strategic infrastructure will connect the two closest capitals in the world, facilitating people and goods circulation, while strengthening trade exchanges within the African Continental Free Trade Zone (AfCFTA).
The two presidents also reaffirmed their commitment to consolidating their partnership in the energy sector. They are particularly focusing on the Boucle of Friendship Energy, a project aiming to connect the energy grids of the region to improve electricity supply and support economic development.
In this context, an agreement was signed to regulate the implementation of this interconnection. It includes the development of a major hydroelectric power project on the Likouala River, with an installed capacity of 12,900 megawatts. This joint project by the DRC, RDC, and Angola aims to make Central Africa an important energy production hub.
Beyond economic issues, President Sassou N’Guesso and Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi continued their consultations on security challenges and stability issues in the Great Lakes region and Central Africa. The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to dialogue and strengthened cooperation to preserve peace, a necessary condition for development of both countries and the entire region.
