Dutch defender Jean-Paul van Hecke addressed the press today, just three days after his significant transfer to Tottenham and on the eve of the Netherlands’ crucial match against Sweden on Saturday evening.

When asked about being the player valued at 60 million euros, Jean-Paul van Hecke offered a slight smile. “It’s always challenging to comment on such figures,” he stated. “My primary satisfaction comes from what this transfer brings to my former club and my youth academy. For me, the price itself doesn’t signify a change in who I am, although I am immensely proud to join one of England’s premier football clubs.”

The defender, who completed his move from Brighton to Tottenham earlier this week, appeared at the Houston press conference on Friday evening sporting a black eye. He quickly clarified that the injury was not inflicted by national coach Ronald Koeman, who was seated beside him. Van Hecke emphasized his unwavering focus on the upcoming match against Sweden. “Firstly, I am entirely concentrated on this game and nothing else,” he affirmed. “This transfer isn’t a distraction; I’m not affected by it. My full attention is on the Netherlands national team. In truth, I wasn’t involved in the finalization of the transfer all day. The coach certainly afforded me the necessary time to manage it, but that was the extent of my involvement.”

“Being here is truly a fantastic experience; I am incredibly proud to be part of this!”

Van Hecke is well aware of how a subpar performance against Sweden’s formidable attack, featuring Premier League rivals Isak and Gyökeres, might be viewed, especially following the Netherlands’ 2-2 draw against Japan in their opening match. However, he delivered a strong performance in that initial fixture and confidently stated his ability to compartmentalize the week’s dual significant events. “This transfer represents a major stride in my career; I’m moving to one of England’s biggest clubs,” he explained. “It significantly boosts my confidence, and now my entire focus is on the Netherlands. Being here is genuinely a superb experience, and I’m so proud to be part of this squad! I truly hope we get to play many more matches in this World Cup.”

At 26 years old, Van Hecke is making his debut in a major international tournament and is determined to make a significant impact. Looking ahead, he will find familiar faces at Tottenham from his time at Brighton, including manager Roberto de Zerbi, under whom he played for two seasons in southern England from 2022 to 2024. He will also be joined by fellow Dutch talents, such as Xavi Simons, who is unfortunately sidelined for this World Cup, and defender Micky van de Ven. However, Van de Ven’s future at Tottenham might be uncertain, as he is currently a target for top clubs like Liverpool and Barcelona.

The Dutch national team camp in the USA appears to be a hub of significant transfer activity. For now, the most immediate beneficiary is NAC Breda. The club had shrewdly negotiated a 7.5% sell-on clause for any future transfer when Van Hecke signed with Brighton in 2020. This latest transaction is set to bring them approximately 4.5 million euros, including training compensation. “It’s well-deserved for that club,” remarked the player, who grew up in Arnemuiden, a town in the southernmost part of the Netherlands, so close to the sea that England was reportedly visible on clear days.
