Abidjan, May 22, 2026 – The ECOWAS Centre for Gender Development (CCDG), collaborating with UN Women and several specialized ECOWAS agencies, has officially endorsed a comprehensive regional program in Abidjan. This groundbreaking initiative is strategically designed to integrate gender considerations with climate change mitigation and the burgeoning green economy across the West African region.

A crucial meeting, convened on May 15 and 16 at the ECOWAS Resident Representation in Côte d’Ivoire, served to finalize the strategic document underpinning the program and to delineate a clear roadmap for its forthcoming implementation.

This forward-looking program is poised to amplify regional efforts, directly addressing member states’ urgent priorities in gender equality, climate resilience, and the essential ecological transition. Concurrently, it aims to secure vital financial backing for the existing ECOWAS Action Plan on Gender and Climate Change, solidifying the region’s commitment to these critical areas.

Sandra Oulaté Fattoh, the esteemed Director of the CCDG, underscored that the ongoing ecological transition presents both formidable challenges and significant opportunities for women and young girls throughout West Africa.

Adjaratou Fatou Ndiaye, the UN Women Resident Representative in Côte d’Ivoire, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that this initiative represents a pivotal shift “from political discourse to concrete action” in confronting the evolving climatic and economic landscape of the region.

Dr. Kalilou Sylla, the ECOWAS Commissioner for Economic Affairs and Agriculture, further articulated the indispensable need for an inclusive green transition. He stressed the importance of creating genuine opportunities for women and youth to participate fully and benefit from this transformative shift.

The conclusive document for this program is slated for official adoption during a dedicated working session. This session is scheduled to be held in Lomé, Togo, from June 29 to July 6, 2026.
