Famine looms in Somalia as hunger crisis deepens
The Horn of Africa nation of Somalia faces a looming famine as the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) issues a stark warning. Severe food insecurity now affects nearly 6.5 million people, exacerbated by relentless drought conditions that have shattered livelihoods across the country.
pastoralism crumbles under drought pressure
With two consecutive seasons of failed rainfall, experts fear a slide back to the devastating hunger levels recorded in 2022. Pastoralism, the backbone of Somalia’s economy and income source for over 60% of the population, is collapsing. Mass livestock losses have stripped families of food and critical income, forcing thousands to seek refuge in displacement camps.
stories of survival lost to drought
A 61-year-old herder in Dhusamareb watched helplessly as 90% of his goats and two-thirds of his camels perished within a year. « I fear people will meet the same fate as my animals, » he shares. Meanwhile, in the Nugal region, a 19-year-old mother fled her home after her entire herd died, desperate to protect her children from starvation.
mass displacement and strained humanitarian aid
Over half a million people have been displaced in 2025 alone, driven from their homes by conflict and drought, particularly in the Al-Miskat hills of the Bari region in Puntland. As humanitarian funding dwindles, aid organizations are scaling back food distributions, water access projects, and healthcare services—just as needs skyrocket.
The ICRC has stepped in to support more than 5,000 displaced families since November 2025. Efforts include rehabilitating boreholes in Bari and Sanaag, supplying equipment to restore wells, and treating severely malnourished children at the stabilization center in Kismayo. The organization also backs 11 clinics run by the Somali Red Crescent Society.
a red alert for millions at risk
« Without urgent rainfall and a substantial boost in humanitarian aid, millions could sink deeper into food emergency, » warns the ICRC. Somalia stands at a pivotal moment: every passing day heightens the threat of a full-blown humanitarian catastrophe.
