French premier minister begins foreign visits to Qatar and Morocco

Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has embarked on his first official international tour since taking office, with key stops in Doha and Rabat. The visits underscore France’s commitment to strengthening ties with both Gulf and North African partners.

Lecornu, accompanied by former Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, arrived in the Qatari capital on Tuesday to convey France’s condolences following the passing of the country’s former emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. The funeral proceedings were held Sunday evening in Doha, where the French delegation paid respects to the late leader who governed Qatar from 1995 until his historic abdication in 2013.

The Élysée emphasized the former emir’s role in transforming Qatar through “historic modernization” and “innovative diplomacy.” The visit reflects the deep economic and strategic partnership between France and the Gulf state, spanning energy, defense, and cultural exchanges.

Strategic talks in Rabat to deepen Franco-Moroccan relations

After concluding his mission in Qatar, Prime Minister Lecornu will proceed to Rabat on Wednesday evening for high-level discussions with Moroccan officials. The two-day visit will include meetings with Moroccan Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch and a delegation of twelve French ministers, including Foreign Affairs and Interior representatives.

This marks the first high-level governmental exchange since 2019, signaling a deliberate effort to restore and enhance bilateral relations. The timing follows President Emmanuel Macron’s 2024 recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Western Sahara, a move that sparked diplomatic tensions with Algeria but paved the way for renewed cooperation.

The visit is expected to culminate in discussions about a potential state visit by King Mohammed VI to Paris, along with the signing of a landmark partnership treaty designed to formalize an “exceptional” strategic alliance between the two nations.
