Gabon ends long-standing fisheries partnership with the european union

Gabon has formally concluded its Sustainable Fisheries Partnership Agreement (SFPA) with the European Union (EU), opting against a renewal. This significant accord officially reached its expiration on June 28, 2026, marking the end of a nearly two-decade-long collaboration.

Initially established in 2007, the partnership saw multiple extensions, with its most recent renewal occurring in 2021. Over a five-year period, this agreement reportedly contributed 17 billion CFA francs to the Gabonese treasury.

The decision to discontinue the agreement with the EU was first championed during the Council of Ministers meeting in June 2025, driven by the vision of Transition President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema. This move represents a substantial shift, concluding 19 years of fisheries cooperation with the European bloc.

From Libreville’s perspective, the financial returns from the agreement were deemed inadequate when weighed against the substantial value of marine resources harvested from Gabonese waters. The nation expressed dissatisfaction with the insufficient revenue generated through the partnership.

Moving forward, the Gabonese government is committed to prioritizing the domestic processing of tuna. This strategic direction aims to stimulate job creation, attract industrial investments, and enhance the overall added value within the national economy.
