Gabon joins un leadership in historic 81st assembly election

Gabon has secured a pivotal position on the global stage after being elected as a vice-president during the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. This landmark achievement marks the nation’s triumphant return to the UN’s steering committee after nearly ten years of absence.

On June 2, 2026, Gabon was among 21 nations selected for this prestigious role, joining five other African counterparts: Cabo Verde, Egypt, Guinea-Bissau, Eritrea, and Zimbabwe. The Gabonese delegation will officially commence its one-year mandate in September 2026, aligning with the solemn opening of the 81st UNGA session.

By representing the African regional bloc, Gabon’s Permanent Mission to the UN will play a crucial part in shaping international legislative priorities, collaborating closely with the newly elected President, Khalilur Rahman. The Gabonese representatives will spearhead critical diplomatic and administrative functions, including presiding over key plenary sessions.

The nation will also take the helm of the UN’s agenda, serving on the influential General Committee. This body is responsible for structuring the session’s agenda, overseeing pivotal voting processes on global resolutions, and managing institutional priorities. Gabon’s participation underscores its commitment to advancing African interests on the world stage.

Central to this diplomatic stride is the vision of Gabon’s Head of State, President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema. Under his leadership, Gabon aims to champion sustainable development, climate action, and institutional reforms within the UN framework, reinforcing its role as a proactive advocate for the African Group’s agenda.
