Gabonese government and imf continue constructive economic discussions
Gabon is presently engaged in a crucial phase of technical preparation and negotiation with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), aiming to establish a new framework for economic cooperation. The nation continues its robust dialogue with this long-standing financial partner. Officials confirm that the discussions between the Gabonese government and the IMF are progressing consistently, characterized by a constructive and responsible atmosphere.
Since the conclusion of the spring meetings this past April, both Gabonese representatives and the IMF teams have maintained regular exchanges via videoconference. These discussions adhere to a jointly agreed schedule, with a primary focus on technical work. A significant development occurred on July 2, 2026, in Washington, D.C., at the IMF headquarters. Thierry Minko, Gabon’s Minister of Economy, Finance, Debt, and Public Participations, also responsible for combating the high cost of living, held a cordial meeting with the IMF’s Africa Director. He was accompanied by his colleagues, including Aliona Cebotari, the mission chief for Gabon.
According to governmental sources, this ongoing dialogue is guided by a collaboratively established and cohesive roadmap. This strategic plan is structured around several key pillars: the amended finance law for 2026, the comprehensive macroeconomic and budgetary framework spanning 2027-2029, the gradual reinforcement of economic, financial, and budgetary data, and the meticulous preparation for subsequent phases of engagement with the Fund.
