Jihadist video surfaces from Inates attack, reigniting security concerns in Niger’s Tillabéry region

A video, purportedly depicting the June 17, 2026 assault on the military base in Inates, Tillabéry region, western Niger, has been released by jihadist factions operating within the volatile “three borders” zone. The footage, presented by these groups, aims to illustrate the sequence of events during the attack.

According to the visuals and accompanying statements, the offensive allegedly commenced with a barrage of mortar fire directed at the military installations. The assailants claim they then encircled the base before launching a concerted ground assault utilizing automatic weaponry and grenade launchers, suggesting a meticulously planned operation.

The creators of the video assert that Nigerien soldiers offered limited resistance before attempting to retreat. They also claim to have established multiple ambushes around the base, designed to cut off any escape routes or prevent the arrival of reinforcements.

However, the casualty figures put forth by the jihadist groups remain unverified by independent sources. They boast of killing at least 80 Nigerien military personnel and destroying seven armored vehicles, six pick-up trucks, and nine fuel tankers. Furthermore, they claim to have seized a substantial cache of equipment, including twenty pick-up trucks, eighteen machine guns, a precision rifle, several grenade launchers, three mortars, and significant quantities of ammunition.

As of now, these numbers have not been corroborated by Nigerien authorities or any impartial entity. It is a common tactic in such conflicts for armed organizations to leverage their own video productions as propaganda tools. This serves to showcase their operational capabilities, intimidate adversaries, and bolster recruitment efforts. Consequently, the casualty and equipment figures they disseminate may be exaggerated or incomplete.

Irrespective of the precise details, this latest attack underscores the persistent deterioration of the security landscape in the Tillabéry region, where Nigerien forces are increasingly confronted by sophisticated offensives. Despite strategic adjustments implemented over several years and enhanced military cooperation with new partners, armed groups continue to demonstrate their capacity to orchestrate complex assaults against military positions.

The release of this video carries significant strategic implications. Beyond documenting the violence, it serves as a powerful display of the jihadist groups’ strength, aiming to undermine the morale of security forces and send a clear message to all stakeholders involved in the broader counter-insurgency efforts across the Sahel.
