The Malian delegation, led by key education officials, participated in a landmark international conference held at the Southern University of Science and Technology in Shenzhen. The event brought together policymakers, university leaders, tech innovators and international organizations to redefine the future of higher education.
Mali’s education reform takes global spotlight
The Republic of Mali was represented by Dr. Mamadou Koumaré, Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Management of Bamako (USSGB) and Coordinator of the UNESCO International Centre for Higher Education Innovation (UNESCO-ICHEI) partnership with Malian universities.
This high-level gathering focused on bridging higher education with cutting-edge technology sectors, particularly artificial intelligence, to create a dynamic talent development ecosystem. Discussions centered on three key pillars:
- Innovative training programs – Developing AI-driven curricula in agriculture, commerce, education and natural sciences
- Knowledge sharing – Highlighting successful tech-driven educational initiatives
- Global academic alliances – Strengthening the International Institute of Online Education (IIOE) network through shared research and partnerships
AI and lifelong learning in focus
The summit emphasized the critical role of artificial intelligence in transforming higher education and workforce development. Delegates explored new models for AI-powered talent cultivation, including:
- Curriculum innovation to meet industry demands
- Practical skill development through hands-on learning
- Continuous learning pathways for professionals and students
Dr. Koumaré highlighted Mali’s commitment to digital transformation in education, noting the recent partnerships between three Malian institutions – Université Kurukanfuga de Bamako, USSGB and the University Pedagogy Institute – with UNESCO-ICHEI to advance AI integration in higher learning.

The international body renewed its pledge to strengthen Mali’s higher education sector through targeted capacity-building initiatives. These efforts aim to enhance human, technical and technological capabilities across Malian universities, ensuring alignment with global educational standards.
The summit concluded with a call for strengthened collaboration between academia and industry, particularly in leveraging AI to address Africa’s evolving educational and economic challenges.
