Mali Morocco diaspora forum Bamako 2026
The second edition of the International Diaspora Forum (FID) is taking place at the Bamako International Conference Center (CICB) from July 16 to 18, 2026. This year’s theme, «Malian Diaspora and Productive Investments: Building a Strong Mali for Sustainable Development,» underscores a shared commitment to harnessing the potential of expatriates as key drivers of national progress.
Morocco leads as guest of honor
With Morocco as the guest of honor, the event highlights the importance of fostering stronger ties between the diaspora and their countries of origin. The opening ceremony was led by Prime Minister Abdoulaye Maïga, who emphasized the critical role of Malians abroad in shaping the nation’s future.
Shared experiences with diaspora engagement
Morocco’s Ambassador to Mali, Driss Isbayène, shared insights into his country’s approach to engaging its six million expatriates—a number nearly matching Mali’s diaspora. He stressed that both nations face the challenge of not only maintaining connections with their citizens abroad but also encouraging them to invest in economically viable opportunities back home.
«The goal is to ensure our diaspora remains emotionally and financially invested in the country, channeling their resources into initiatives that fuel sustainable growth and prosperity», Isbayène stated.
Voices from the diaspora
Alimatou Diallo, a Senegalese resident in Mali, shared her positive experience, saying, «Since settling here, I’ve never felt isolated. The forum provides a platform to grow, promote our products, and contribute meaningfully to Mali’s development».
The High Council of Malians Abroad, represented by its president Habib Sylla, reflected on the encouraging message delivered by transitional President Assimi Goïta during the first FID edition: «Invest in your homeland without hesitation. My door is always open to support you in overcoming any obstacles».
Sylla called this commitment «the strongest signal the diaspora could hope for», urging expatriates to channel their investments into high-potential sectors.
Digital bridges to the homeland
Minister of Malians Abroad and African Integration, Mossa Ag Attaher, described the diaspora as the «heartbeat of the nation’s destiny». He introduced the Diaspora Hub, a digital infrastructure designed to permanently connect Malians abroad with national institutions and development opportunities.
«This platform goes beyond a digital tool—it’s a strategic framework to anchor Malians in the diaspora to their country’s institutions and long-term growth initiatives», he explained.
A united vision for economic transformation
Prime Minister Maïga framed the forum’s mission as part of a broader strategy to build a sovereign, resilient, and inclusive Mali. He highlighted the role of the Alliance of Sahel States, which fosters regional economic integration and mutual cooperation.
«Our diaspora represents a vital bridge between Mali, the Sahel, and the world. Their expertise, networks, and investment capacity are indispensable in driving sustainable development and strengthening our regional alliances», he affirmed.
