Mali’s military command undergoes significant reshuffle after April security incidents

Following the coordinated assaults of April 25, 2026, which saw the tragic loss of former Defense Minister General Sadio Camara, Mali has initiated a comprehensive restructuring of its military hierarchy. These attacks were claimed by both the JNIM and the Front de libération de l’Azawad (FLA).

A special edition of the Journal officiel, published on May 29, confirmed several senior officer appointments to pivotal roles within the Malian Armed Forces and the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) Unified Force, marking a critical moment for Sahel current affairs.

Brigadier General Makan Alassane Diarra now assumes leadership of the AES Unified Force, succeeding General Daouda Traoré. His extensive background in military operations across the eastern regions of the country was a decisive factor in this strategic designation.

To fill General Diarra’s previous position as Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations at the General Staff of the Armies, authorities have appointed Brigadier General Mamadou Massaoulé Samaké, who previously served as a strategy advisor. Colonel-major Yacouba Sanogo, in turn, takes on the crucial role of strategic advisor to the General Staff.

This extensive overhaul also extends to operational commands across the nation. Colonel-major Karim Traoré has been named Commander of the East Theater, while Colonel-major Didier Dembélé now leads the South Theater. Colonel Issa Bagayoko has been entrusted with the command of the Center Theater.

These appointments are part of a series of decisive actions taken after the April incidents. The President of the Transition, General Assimi Goïta, has personally reassumed the Defense portfolio, with General Oumar Diarra designated as the Minister Delegate responsible for this vital sector.

Through this significant military leadership change, Bamako aims to bolster its operational responsiveness against an escalating security threat and enhance coordination between national military efforts and those conducted under the AES framework.
