Medical partnership between Sorbonne University and CHIC in Benin

West Africa’s medical and research landscape is on the verge of reaching a groundbreaking milestone. Sorbonne University, one of Europe’s leading academic and medical institutions, has set its sights on Bénin. A high-level delegation from the French establishment, led by its president, recently visited the Centre Hospitalier International de Calavi (CHIC) to explore this new flagship of public health in the country.

This strategically significant visit outlines the framework for a promising collaboration, designed to bridge the gap between academia and healthcare providers. The goal? To elevate medical training and healthcare services across the subregion.

Cutting-edge technical facilities

Inaugurated to redefine healthcare standards and drastically reduce medical evacuations abroad, the CHIC left a lasting impression on its European guests. Spanning over 40,000 m² with a capacity of more than 430 beds, the center is equipped with state-of-the-art imaging and treatment technologies, particularly in medical oncology, radiotherapy, and complex cardiology.

The delegation toured the medical wards and technical departments, witnessing firsthand the meticulous infrastructure adhering to the strictest international standards.

Tailored training and advanced research

Far from a mere courtesy visit, this meeting signals the start of an active phase of collaboration. The shared objective is clear: to develop specialized training programs that align with the CHIC’s advanced needs while leveraging existing partnerships in Bénin.

By merging Sorbonne University’s academic expertise with the CHIC’s technological potential, Bénin is not only gaining a modern hospital—it is laying the foundation for a leading hub of tomorrow’s medicine on the African continent.
