Morocco and UNFPA strengthen strategic alliance for human rights and health

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and Morocco are deepening their collaborative efforts on critical issues including human rights, healthcare, and gender parity. This alliance focuses heavily on practical field applications and the reinforcement of national public policies.

During a meeting in Genève on the sidelines of the 62nd Human Rights Council session, Alfonso Barragues, deputy director of the UNFPA liaison office, met with El Habib Belkouch, the Interministerial Delegate for Human Rights, to review these shared objectives.

Priorities for maternal health and gender equality

Central to this cooperation is the enhancement of maternal health services and a concerted effort to lower mortality rates associated with pregnancy and childbirth. Furthermore, the UNFPA is committed to intensifying the fight against gender-based violence and harmful practices, such as early marriage, which infringe upon the rights of women and girls.

Expanding access to sexual and reproductive health services remains a cornerstone of the program. The necessity of ensuring equitable coverage across the entire country is paramount. The goal is to bring these essential services closer to the population by strengthening the network of primary health centers, ensuring that care is available not just in major hospitals but at the local level.

Support for public policy and institutional development

Beyond specific health sectors, the UNFPA provides technical guidance to Moroccan institutions for the creation and execution of broader public policies. This support extends across various government branches, including the ministries of Education, Health, and Social Protection. The organization remains dedicated to assisting these departments in formulating and implementing integrated strategies.

A partnership rooted in field action

This collaboration is built on the principle that the success of public policies is measured by their effectiveness on the ground. Consequently, the UNFPA maintains a close working relationship with youth and women’s organizations, coordinated with Moroccan authorities.

The partnership with the Interministerial Delegation for Human Rights (DIDH) focuses on monitoring and implementing international recommendations. By turning global commitments into local actions, this strategic alliance aims to foster a sustainable environment for the protection and promotion of human rights throughout Morocco.
