A high-level Moroccan parliamentary delegation recently participated in the 10th Summit of Parliament Presidents and the 19th plenary session of the Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean (AP-UpM), held over the weekend at the Egyptian Parliament’s headquarters in the new administrative capital. The delegation, led by Abdelmajid Fassi Fihri, Vice President of the Chamber of Representatives, seized the opportunity to solidify Morocco’s influence within this key Euro-Mediterranean parliamentary body.

Strengthening parliamentary ties in the Mediterranean

During the event, a Bureau and enlarged Bureau meeting took place, where participants approved the new AP-UpM Bureau composition for 2026-2030, including the chairmanship assignments for permanent commissions. Morocco was elected as a Bureau member and entrusted with leading the Artificial Intelligence Commission—a clear endorsement of the country’s diplomatic credibility and the growing prominence of its parliamentary institutions on the regional stage.

In his address to the plenary session, Fassi Fihri emphasized that the AP-UpM remains a vital platform for fostering dialogue and cooperation between parliaments across the Mediterranean. He highlighted how the chosen themes—artificial intelligence, youth participation, and parliamentary diplomacy for peace and stability in the Middle East—reflect a shared awareness among Euro-Mediterranean parliamentarians about navigating a transformative era. This transition extends beyond technological shifts to encompass cultural realignments, evolving power dynamics, and new decision-making mechanisms.

Morocco’s strategic vision for technological advancement

Fassi Fihri underscored that under the visionary leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, Morocco continues to advance its economic modernization, digital transformation, and infrastructure development. The country’s national strategy prioritizes a knowledge-based economy as a cornerstone for sustainable growth, enhanced competitiveness, and reinforcing Morocco’s role as a trusted partner across the Mediterranean, Africa, and beyond.

Active engagement in key discussions

The Moroccan delegation, which included Chaoui Belassal, Meriem Rmili, Houria Didi, Rabab Aïlal, Salwa Demnati, and Ibrahim Aâba, actively contributed to discussions on pressing Mediterranean issues. These ranged from parliamentary diplomacy and artificial intelligence to youth involvement in decision-making processes and efforts to bolster regional security, stability, and shared prosperity.

The sessions concluded with a renewed call for sustained parliamentary coordination among member states. Delegates reaffirmed their commitment to positioning the AP-UpM as a trusted dialogue platform dedicated to advancing security, stability, sustainable development, and collective prosperity across Mediterranean communities.
